In the Suburbs, I...
… should be buying gas, according to this map of D.C.-area gas prices. The lowest, in Maryland, are about $3.70 per gallon of regular gas. (The D.C. average is more than $4, but some stations are at or above $5).Larger symbols on this map, made with ArcGIS, represent higher prices:  Here’s an interactive version:  Source: washingtondcgasprices.com | Map shapefiles | Data

Migration to Texas 2009-10
On my work blog this morning I posted three maps visualizing new U.S. Census data on how many people moved into and out of Texas at some point between 2009.  This map shows net migration to and from Texas by state, with darker shades of green representing higher numbers of residents who left their respective states for Texas. Darker reds represent states that received more Texans than they...

NOAA's Climate Change Library
The city of Chicago is planning ahead for climate change, choosing different paving materials and plants in anticipation of warmer temperatures, according to this story in The New York Times. “Cities adapt or they go away,” said Aaron N. Durnbaugh, deputy commissioner of Chicago’s Department of Environment. “Climate change is happening in both real and dramatic ways, but also in slow, pervasive...

The Sentiment on Bill Keller (Updated)
Reaction to New York Times editor Bill Keller’s recent piece about Twitter appears to be mixed — at least according to a quick sentiment analysis of related tweets.  See… Excellent piece And… Must you always nay say, @nytkeller? Here’s how this application charted recent tweets mention Keller:  UPDATE (10 a.m. Monday): Since the publication in the print...

Another View of Obama Speech
The highlight for some in President Obama’s 45-minute speech yesterday about Arab governments and the Middle East was a section on Israel. Obama called for returning Israel to its borders before the Six-Day War in 1967, when the country took control of the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and the Golan Heights.  Here’s the speech in a “word tree,” a visualization technique from...

Top-Tier Soccer League Attendance by Country
Germans like their fussball, apparently. The country has the highest average attendance to association football matches in the world — better even than England, where the rules for what we call soccer were codified 150 years ago.  More than 41,000 people on average attend matches in the Bundesliga, followed by the Premier League (England), La Liga (Spain) and Primera División (México). The U.S....

Five Years of Facebook Posts
I joined Facebook nearly five years ago, and I’ve since posted more than 1,700 items to my wall, a figure I obtained by downloading my profile history. I wondered what all these status messages, news stories, cat pictures, videos and other musings would look like in a word cloud (excluding common Facebook phrases, dates, my name and the text string “happy birthday”).  ...

Mapping Starbucks Locations
I stumbled upon this interactive, which visualizes the locations of more than 18,000 international Starbucks locations using Google Fusion Tables and custom JavaScript. Here’s the USA view:  Europe and Asia: And Washington, DC. Notice the lack of locations in my ‘hood, Brookland, which is represented in the red circle. Bummer. Fortunately, there’s a nice coffee shop nearby...

DC vs. Austin Weather
I love Austin, but my biggest complaint about Texas’ capitol city is the oppressive summer heat. And when I say summer, I mean April to October. Today’s high temperature is forecast to be 98 degrees, for example.  A pleasant surprise in my new city, Washington, D.C., is that I’m actually experiencing an extended spring, with average high temperatures in the lower 70s for the...

English Premier League Wins, Goals
Today’s match between Manchester United and Chelsea could well decide who wins the English Premier League title this season. Of course, both teams are comfortable in this position, having dominated the league in the last two decades along with two other elite clubs: Arsenal and Liverpool. This column chart shows that dominance, both in wins (470 for Manchester United and 383 for Chelsea)...

Visualizing Geo Data on a Globe
From the Google Code blog: Today we’re sharing a new Chrome Experiment called the WebGL Globe. It’s a simple, open visualization platform for geographic data that runs in WebGL-enabled browsers like Google Chrome. The globe below shows world population, and we’ve created another globe showing Google search traffic. Very cool. But good luck getting it to render in Internet Explorer. ...

White House Maps 'Excess Properties'
The White House today released an interactive map of excess properties maintained by the federal government. And, even better, it appears they made it with open-source tools. An explainer:  The Federal Government is the biggest property owner in the United States, and billions of taxpayer dollars are wasted each year on government properties that are no longer needed…. There are roughly...

Mapping Redistricting with jQuery Before/After
Today’s viz from work uses the jQuery Before/After plugin to create sliders over static Texas House redistricting maps to visualize changes: The Texas House approved new political maps last week as part of decennial redistricting. In many cases, the newly drawn state House districts changed boundaries so that Republicans could preserve their majority. Use this interactive map graphic the...
